Integrated Circuits, ICs as short, are used to shrink down a pre existent circuit into small little packages that could be conviniently found and used. These chips are basically circuits inside of circuits. They may do lots of work or just one thing.
If you really think about it, modern processors are ICs and they have the mosy complex IC "die"s out there. We are hitting the absulute and at shrinking down transistors on size.
The most common die material is Silicon alongside with SiO. However newer chips use Gallium as well.
